1 – The Nazi invasion of the USSR: the road to world war

From June 22, 1941, in Operation Barbarossa, Nazi Germany invaded theUSSR.
The largest military operation of the Second World War. It opened up the Eastern Front, stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea.

The German-Soviet non-aggression pact is broken. This break fully satisfies all anti-fascist and anti-Nazi fighters. In the June 25, 1941 issue, Unzer Wort and Notre Parole, clandestine publications, called for support for the USSR under Nazi attack, and warned of the threats aimed particularly at Jews.

Despite the enormous losses suffered by the Soviet army, ill-prepared and decimated by the Stalinist purges of 1938, the German troops were slowed down and then blocked during the Battle of Moscow. The German army failed to defeat the Soviet troops, but Hitler, confident of his invincibility, planned new offensives against the USSR.

At the same time, in Eastern Europe, he stepped up his program to exterminate the Jews.

In December 1941, the conflict spread with the entry into the war of the United States, victims of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The USA fought alongside the UK, the USSR, China and Free France. These Allied forces faced Germany and the Axis powers linked to the Nazi regime, such as Italy and Japan.

From then on, the war went global.
